Curating History Sessions
Welcome to Liskeard & District Museums Curating History Sessions for home education children age 5-16.
Starting on Monday 19th January we will run on the first and third Monday of the month during term time only. 10:30am-12.00pm for children age 5-10 years and 1:30-3pm for children age 11-16. Cost of each session is £5 per child. All materials are provided.
Each session will be structured to run for 45 minutes then we’ll take a 15 minute break to use the facilities, re-group, explore the museum, (squash and biscuits provided during the break) then we’ll carry on for 30 minutes more.
What will my child be learning?
Rather than following the National Curriculum we will be looking at history through many of the objects within the museums collection.
From January to March there will be four sessions, to begin with we will be looking at camera’s, photography, photographers and portraits, followed by a session on Emily Hobhouse. These sessions are tied in with the new exhibitions in the Rapson Gallery which will be re-opening in March. We will also spend some time discovering the Edwardians as we have an award winning Edwardian exhibition in the Daniel Gumb room.
For the secondary school age children we will also be offering the option to undertake Museum Object Handling, something which all our volunteers undertake as do any work experience students who come into the museum – there is no additional cost to this.
Who will be teaching my child?
We are a volunteer run museum with a part-time manager who is paid by Liskeard Town Council (who own the museum). As of February 2025 we had a volunteer join us who had previously volunteered with children of many different backgrounds and has enthusiastically taken on all of the learning activities for the museum, she will be running the majority of the sessions with assistance at points from other volunteers. All of the volunteers who work with the children are DBS checked and our Learning Volunteer is also first aid trained.
How do I sign my child up?
Please email our learning volunteer Lizzie at the museum and provide the names and ages of your child/children. Sessions are payable in advance and Lizzie will send you details on how to pay. learning@liskeardmuseum.co.uk
